### Articulation ### Articulation

The following articulation features are used by eSpeak NG to describe place of
articulation features not in the main consonant tables.

| Feature | Symbol | Name | Origin | | Feature | Symbol | Name | Origin |
|---------|--------|-----------------|---------------| |---------|--------|-----------------|---------------|
| `lgl` | ◌̼ | linguolabial | `cainteoir` | | `lgl` | ◌̼ | linguolabial | `cainteoir` |
| `idt` | ◌̪͆ | interdental | `espeak-ng` | | `idt` | ◌̪͆ | interdental | `espeak-ng` |
| | ◌̪ | dental | |
| `apc` | ◌̺ | apical | `espeak-ng` | | `apc` | ◌̺ | apical | `espeak-ng` |
| `lmn` | ◌̻ | laminal | `cainteoir` | | `lmn` | ◌̻ | laminal | `cainteoir` |

The following articulation features control the location on the IPA chart. As
such, the phonemes are described in their new location on the IPA chart after
applying the articulation diacritic. These diacritics are recorded in the
Cainteoir Text-to-Speech program to provide accurate round-tripping between
different phoneme transcriptions.

| Feature | Symbol | Name | Origin |
|---------|--------|-----------------|---------------|
| `dzd` | ◌̪ | dental | `cainteoir` |
| `adv` | ◌̟ | advanced | `cainteoir` |
| `ret` | ◌̠ | retracted | `cainteoir` |
| `czd` | ◌̈ | centralized | `cainteoir` |
| `mcz` | ◌̽ | mid-centralized | `cainteoir` |
| `rsd` | ◌̝ | raised | `cainteoir` |
| `lwr` | ◌̞ | lowered | `cainteoir` |
| | ◌̟ | advanced | |
| | ◌̠ | retracted | |
| | ◌̈ | centralized | |
| | ◌̽ | mid-centralized | |
| | ◌̝ | raised | |
| | ◌̞ | lowered | |

The articulations that do not have a corresponding feature name are recorded
using the features of their new location in the consonant or vowel charts, not
using the features of the base phoneme.
